It's clear that a visit to a Challenger Learning Center isn't just a field tripit is a deeply grounded learning experience that engages students, transforming them into scientists, engineers, or researchers, and placing them in a simulated space mission where they solve real-life challenges. Rooted in Kansas State Standards, and Oklahoma PASS standards as well as national education standards for all of the communities we serve, Challenger Learning Centers reach approximately 400,000 students and upwards of 20,000 teachers per year through a broad array of mission-based activities. Regardless of a student's cultural background, economic situation, gender, learning style, or academic level, every Challenger Learning Center simulation provides students with an opportunity to succeed. Every mission is successful! Students leave with a renewed spirit of camaraderie and boosted self-esteem. Challenger Center for Space Science Education embraces a pedagogy that promotes scientific literacy by encouraging exploration and inquiry, and by exciting young people about knowledge and learning. Our curriculum gives you everything you need to make connections between science and the everyday. A three-hour mission simulation at the Challenger Learning Center of Kansas is an innovative and exciting co-curricular experience. Each mission is designed to hold a class of 16 to 32 students.

Prior to flying a mission, the educator for each class will attend a teacher orientation program at least four weeks before the date of their mission. At this workshop, educators will receive materials specifically designed to prepare the students for their mission. The Curriculum materials teachers receive are aligned with state and national standards and are 'plug and teach' making it easy to integrate into their studies in the weeks prior to their mission date. Keri Dickerson, 5th gade teacher, Argonia: "We were able to integrate the Challenger program into our school and daily curriculum quite easily. The activities in which we were provided fit nicely into our daily routines. Many of the lessons were able to be integrated right in with our science lessons and at times we laid our science lesson aside to focus on the lesson provided by Challenger. A lesson that comes to mind was working with the X and Y coordinates. We were studying hard at the time for the Kansas State Math Assessments and the coordinates were tested in great depth for our classes. The Challenger lesson was a great way to reinforce what was already being used in the classroom. We worked with average temperatures in the Challenger lessons while keeping a log and recording information daily. This was also integrated with ease into our math lessons as our students were tested on averages on the state assessment." |
